My first week was almost over. Friday morning I woke up to find my trash plant had fruit on it! Now I wouldn't have to bum any off my neighbors, although I am sure they didn't mind. I just wanted to prove I could make it here, and reach my goals.
After tending my garden and eating some breakfast, I noticed a very sad man walking down the sidewalk. It was the Mayor of Murkland, Epoch Salamander. He was depressed because he didn't know if Murkland would ever be as great as he dreamed it would. "Don't worry," I tried to cheer him up,"I am sure everyone is doing their best. I've only been here a few days and have met some great people. Just give it time." I think it worked because he walked off a little happier.
The talk with the Mayor made me more determined to do my part, so I loaded up my sale table and began waiting for the customers.
The first one was a woman named Betsy Turbo Pumpkin. She wasn't too interested in my items and started cleaning up my camp.
A few more showed up but they just wanted to play, 'pass the trash pile' in the back of my lot.
I was about to give up for the day when good ole Pookey showed up. With a thoughtful scratch of his chin, he decided to buy one of the little figurines I had found. Little did I know at the time, but he was going to be one of my best customers.
I managed to sell a few more things before I closed up for the day, and then I sat down to celebrate with a cold can of juice. I felt pretty happy about how the day turned out.
I was still feeling hungry, so made a plate of hotdogs. I could only manage to eat a couple and then decided to eat my nightly trash fruit and go to bed.
The next morning I woke early and did some more collecting. I still had quite a bit of money to make to reach my goal of 15000, and I knew I'd be needing to make more trips to granite falls.
After my collecting was done, I decided to visit the Freegans, only when I got there no one was home. 'Thank goodness!' I thought. I had a pretty good stinky cloud following me around and was happy not to have to share it with anyone.
I remembered how they said I should feel free to make myself at home, so turned on the radio and began to practice my dance moves. I had learned some good ones so far just from watching others.
It wasn't long and Brennachan came home and joined me. She said she had been out enjoying the glorious day. I couldn't help but wonder what tasks they were all asked to do for the Mayor. I figured everyone had a part in rebuilding Murkland.
I noticed Pookey walking down the sidewalk and motioned for him to join us. He began dancing with some crazy moves and winked at Brennachan. She blushed and looked away, smiling. 'Hmm,' I wondered, 'Does she have anything to do with his dressing up?' I was sure they knew each other.
Pookey didn't stay long, and after he left I offered to make Brennachan some of my famous grilled 'baked' potatoes.
While I was cooking the rest of the Freegans came home. 'The smell of my cooking must have drawn them back,' I chuckled to myself.
I went to greet them all and told them about my yard sale experience. I also subtly asked them about Pookey and Brennachan, but none of them would say anything. They just kind of all smiled at each other.
Most of the time that evening was spent with Sunshine. We talked and had a good time until the sun began to set, and to my surprise he wanted to become best friends. Of course I accepted, how could I not, he'd be my first best friend in Murkland! I was so happy.
As I was getting ready to leave, he grabbed my hands and looked at me in a strange way, "I'm really glad you came to Murkland," he said, his gaze fixed on my eyes, "and I'm even happier we have become so close. It's like, well, like,..." "Me too," I said quickly, not sure of what he was trying to say, and not sure if I was ready to hear anything like that just yet.
We said goodbye and I staggered sleepily back to my camp. As I ate my trash fruit that night, I thought back on my first week here. I felt I was off to a good start. I had made some great friends and even a best friend. I wasn't sure where my friendship with Sunshine was going to lead, but we had time to figure that out.
