I started my second week off a little murky. As I sat eating my cold, cooler oatmeal, surrounded by rotting leftovers, I wondered how many weeks I would be able to handle before the murkiness got to me.
I was getting ready to go out collecting when I noticed a woman standing next to my mailbox. Her name was Sahara Drydock, and she was from a camp in Nukecrest. "I heard there was someone new living here," she said, waving her hand in front of her nose, "smells like you have been growing trash fruit plants." "Yeah," I beamed, "I have two so far!" We chatted for a little bit and then she helped herself to my leftovers.
"Oh, hey, Don't eat that!" I told her, digging around in my cooler, "I can make you something fresh. I have been working on my franks and beans recipe."
She was about to leave, "Wait!" I ran over to her,"Aren't you hungry?" I asked, holding the bowl out to her. She looked at it for a moment,"Umm, no thanks. I'm not that hungry. It was nice to meet you, I guess. Good luck on your plants." Then she left, walking back down the sidewalk toward Nukecrest.
I went back to taking care of my plants. They didn't smell that bad. Maybe she was talking about me and not the plants. 'Oh well,' I thought, 'everyone gets murky now and then in Murkland.'
After I finished my gardening, I lit a bonfire and was going to practice dancing when I heard someone whistling near the front of my lot. It was Sunshine. "Hey, just thought I'd come see how my new best friend was doing," he grinned. I told him about my visitor and then invited him back to dance near the bonfire. We were having a great time when Jeep Girl showed up to visit.
I invited her back to join us and we all began laughing, dancing and having a great time. Soon a young lady popped around the "pee" bush and said, "Hey sounds like a party back here! Can I join y'all?" Her name was Sandy Sunleaf. She was from the same camp as Sahara. She wanted to come welcome me to Murkland. While we were talking, Sunshine decide to leave.
We danced a little bit longer, then I invited Jeep Girl and Sandy to dinner. My beans and franks still had a few minutes of goodness left. Jeepy had to head home so I was left to get to know Sandy on my own. She was a very friendly person and so much fun to talk with.
Soon she left and I was alone. All in all I had a better day than I had thought I would. I ate my trash fruit and crawled into my tent.
Monday morning I woke to a murky lot again. I was so uncomfortable that the hard concrete bench was more inviting than my lot. I tried to snooze a little when I noticed a dressed up Pookey walking down the sidewalk again. 'Hmm,' I thought, 'I have to know.'
I decided to invite Pookey and a few other friends to the hot springs, since it was bath day. Everyone feels better when clean, maybe he would be more willing to spill his secrets. Well, he was a harder nut to crack than I thought. He just smiled slyly and then said he had to be somewhere. I spent the rest of the morning hanging out with Dusty, Alma, and a new friend Yevette.
I had a good time and got almost fully clean. Dusty was still dancing when I said goodbye and jogged back home. I was pretty tired so ate my trash fruit and went straight to bed.
Tuesday I woke to a surprise of two new trash plants. I was so happy, I had finally filled one whole garden box. I also noticed the little red flag sticking up on my mailbox. I was certainly not expecting what was inside. Bills! Bills for a tent and a bush! And cold oatmeal!!? No way was I going to pay for that. As a result I had to give up my cooler and they would no longer provide me with food.
Later that morning I invited some of the Freegans to come to the library. The bus driver told me I would have to pay for someone to come and serve coffee each time I wanted to visit there. Jeep Girl offered to come and work for the day, I guess she needed the extra money. I met the librarian, Myra, and we talked about her plans for the library. I told her I'd be happy to help if I could.
Myra was happy someone was working the coffee bar and made use of the service. I was talking to some others about the library plans when the mayor's wife showed up. She over heard and was a little concerned. "You don't want to take on too much dear," she told me,"you still have obligations to the Mayor." I promised I wouldn't start working on the library until I finish my other tasks. Then we all had to leave because the library was closing for the day. I didn't even have time to use the bushes.
After an uncomfortable bus ride home, I went quickly to my bush and then ate my trash fruit before sleepytime.
Wednesday was a yard sale day. Pookey showed up but the smells coming from my table made him too nauseous to shop. He soon began cleaning my camp for me. Then the Aeon, the Mayor's wife showed up. She said she was just checking on my progress. I told her when I sold enough I could go to Granite Falls and try and talk the Hermit into giving me the recipe for deodorant. She bought my most expensive item with a smile, and I had enough money to go.
My first stop were the camp showers. I decided bath days were the best days to come to Granite Falls. I was hungry and in desperate need of some fun so I spent most of the day playing horseshoes and then did a little collecting before eating my trash fruit and going to sleep on a log.
The next morning I was up early and feeling pumped! I checked the map to remind myself of all the little paths and turns to take, and then I was on my way to the hermits glade. I only got a little distracted this time. I can't resist glowing bugs!
Kaci, the hermit was out by her garden. I greeted her and told her about my herbing progress. I could identify most plants now. I asked her if she had any special recipes that I could learn, hoping she would tell me the one for deodorant. She did! She said it would be the one I would get the most use from. She even said I could harvest her plants as soon as they all bloomed that day. I had to wait around until it was dark.
I only found 2 plants of parsley and barely got enough to make 2 bottles. It looked like I was going to be coming here more often. I sighed and ate my trash fruit. It always seemed to calm me down.
Then I headed back to camp to find a log to sleep on.
The next morning I made some deodorant. It turned out pretty good. Then I took another shower, since it was Friday, afterward I found a log to nap on until the bus came. I got home late that night and took care of my plants, I was up to five now, and then just ate my fruit and went to bed.
Saturday morning I started off with another yard sale. Pookey came and was feeling a little better and bought a couple of things. I wondered how big his figurine collection was getting.
After my sale, I went to visit the Freegans. I was happy to see Sunshine and told him about my trip. He didn't seem like his sunny self. He did say he had missed me but he was kind of mellow acting. Brennachan came out to say hi and I told her about my trip and about Pookey being my best customer. She laughed. We chatted some more and then started dancing.
I stayed until the sun was setting. Autumn was telling some great stories. Sunshine's mood never really improved. I wanted to talk to him some more, but he went to bed right before I left.
I made my way sleepily back to camp, happy to be home. I hoped Sunshine was okay but was too tired to think about it. I ate my fruit and headed to my tent. My second week here was complete.
